Welcome to The Practice Lab
The Practice Lab is a new, virtual learning environment that lets practitioners build confidence and capability through realistic, AI‑enabled role play—anytime, anywhere.
Developed as part of a 12‑month proof of concept, The Practice Lab integrates interactive simulations into selected workforce learning and development programs. It offers a fresh approach to one of the most powerful (and challenging) learning methods in human services: practising complex conversations and decisions in a safe, supportive space.
Traditional role plays are effective, but they can also feel intimidating, inconsistent, or difficult to scale. The Practice Lab is designed to remove those barriers. Using virtual scenarios, learners can practise, reflect, and try again—without fear of judgement—while trainers gain more consistent, repeatable learning experiences.
The simulations are grounded in real‑world practice and aligned to priority domains including:
- Working with young people using violence in the home
- Residential care
- Reflective practice
- Leadership and supervision
- Trauma‑informed practice
- Neurodiversity
- Professional boundaries
- Mental health
Importantly, The Practice Lab is not a performance assessment tool. It is a learning‑focused environment that supports exploration, reflection, and skill development, helping participants test approaches, build confidence, and deepen professional insight.
Who The Practice Lab is for?
The Practice Lab is for:
- Practitioners working in complex, relational roles who want to strengthen applied skills
- Leaders and supervisors supporting reflective and trauma‑informed practice
- Trainers and learning designers seeking more engaging, scalable learning tools
- Organisations looking to improve training consistency, reach regional and remote workforces, and innovate their learning offer
By combining technology with practice wisdom, The Practice Lab is exploring what’s possible when learning feels safer, more engaging, and more relevant to real work—so people are better prepared for the moments that matter most.
Meet Travis - a young person using violence in the home (YPVITH)
Character name: Travis
Background: Travis is a 14-year-old boy from an outer-suburban Anglo-Celtic family who lives with his mother and younger sister. He has grown up experiencing and witnessing family violence from his father, whose presence remains intermittent but influential. Travis struggles with school attendance, social isolation, ADHD, and ongoing feelings of shame and anger, particularly around fears that he is becoming like his father. Recently, following conflict about school refusal and internet access, Travis became violent at home, pushing his sister and threatening his mother with a knife, leading to increased concerns about safety and support needs.
Skills you practice: Your role as a family support practitioner is to build engagement and establish a safe, trusting connection with Travis. In this 20-minute conversation, aim to explore immediate safety concerns, build rapport through curiosity and empathy, recognise and respond to shame, understand the impact of family violence and Travis’s fear of becoming like his father without excusing his behaviour, explore relationship patterns with his mother, and gently identify strengths, hopes and motivation for change. Success is reflected not by immediate disclosure or accountability, but by Travis feeling understood, staying engaged, and being willing to meet with you again.
Age: 14
Gender: Male
Appearance: Withdrawn, slouched posture, avoids eye contact, may present with irritability and hostility.
